Siemens Mobility, in partnership with Dutch infrastructure management firm ProRail BV, has completed the automation transformation of the Kijfhoek freight rail yard in the Netherlands. The upgraded facility, near Rotterdam, is now operating at full capacity. Leveraging an automated yard management system, it boosts operational efficiency and cargo - handling capabilities, helping the Dutch rail network solidify its position as a freight logistics hub in Europe.
As the largest freight terminal in the Netherlands, Kijfhoek serves as a crucial link between the Port of Rotterdam and major industrial zones across Europe. The project, costing around €110 million, was awarded in 2021 and completed in May 2025. Its core lies in Siemens’ Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system. This system coordinates freight train dispatching, cutting loading and unloading times, streamlining processes, and enhancing reliability. With adaptive algorithms, it auto - detects faults, responds to component failures hierarchically, handles anomalies to reduce impacts and prevent rear - end collisions. It also lowers marshalling costs, shortens transport time, reduces shunting damage, and cuts industrial accidents.
Jens Nordmann, Head of Main Line at Siemens Mobility, stated that the transformation showcases how intelligent automation revolutionizes rail freight operations. The advanced system sets a benchmark for sustainable freight in Europe, fulfilling Siemens’ commitment to making freight transport faster, more efficient, and reliable. Helga Cuijpers, Regional Director for the South Holland Region at the Dutch Rail Infrastructure Agency, noted that the fully - operational facility marks a key milestone. After renovation, the freight yard operates efficiently, reinforcing its status as a vital hub connecting the Port of Rotterdam to European industrial centers.
