Open-Air Travel: Austria Unveils Panoramic Sun Deck Train!

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has launched its new flagship model—the Railjet Sun Deck train, which innovatively blends modern design, open architecture, and immersive travel experiences, setting a new benchmark for comfortable long-distance rail travel.

The train’s most striking feature is its fully openable panoramic roof on the upper deck, allowing passengers to engage directly with the natural surroundings and sky, creating a new “open-air rail travel” scenario. This offers unprecedented sightseeing enjoyment, especially on scenic routes. The train also emphasizes accessibility with low-floor entrances and barrier-free access, ensuring ease of movement for all passengers. Inside, it is equipped with comfortable seating, a modern bistro, digital information screens, and a real-time weather display system, balancing comfort with technological engagement.

This seven-car train is scheduled to enter service in summer 2026, offering over 480 seats, nearly half of which are located on the sun deck. Its introduction not only enriches ÖBB’s long-distance passenger offerings but also signals a shift in rail transport from pure functionality toward fully immersive travel experiences.
