Recently, Romania’s GRAMPET Group has launched a new Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) named “Leon”. Since 2008, Electroputere VFU Pașcani, a company owned by Gruia Stoica, has been manufacturing Leon, the first train fully built in Romania in 80 years.

Development Process of Leon
At the end of 2014, Electroputere VFU Pașcani and GRAMPET Group initiated the construction project of the DMU self - propelled prototype, with over 180 experts involved. In 2020, the group announced that the prototype was entering the final testing phase. When officially launched in June 2025, the train had completed over 30,000 kilometers of testing, obtained CE certification, and is capable of operating anywhere in Europe.
Train Design and Performance
Leon consists of three carriages, with 145 seats in total, including 134 second - class seats and 11 VIP seats. Considering that about 60% of Romania’s railway network is not electrified, the train is equipped with two 390kW high - efficiency diesel engines, with a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The interior features 155 ergonomic seats, along with air conditioning, eco - friendly toilets, dedicated spaces for people with disabilities, and special areas for large luggage and bicycles, providing passengers with European - standard comfort.
