Alstom announced the official commissioning of its first railway maintenance base in Chuy City, Jiangbul State, Kazakhstan, on May 31. As the first completed project among four planned maintenance bases under the investment agreement signed with the Kazakh government in November 2023, this facility marks the first new rail maintenance base built in Kazakhstan since 1988 and a key milestone in Alstom’s strategic deployment in Central Asia.
The new base will provide specialized maintenance services for KZ4 and KZ8 electric locomotives operated by Kazakhstan’s national railway company (KTZ), creating an estimated 100 local technical jobs covering mechanical repair, electronic debugging, and other fields to boost regional employment and economic development. Since establishing cooperation with KTZ in 2010, Alstom has achieved localized production of two locomotive models in Kazakhstan, creating over 1,200 jobs and forming a complete industrial chain from manufacturing to maintenance.
“The establishment of the maintenance base is a natural extension of our investments in Kazakhstan, not only meeting the country’s rail network maintenance needs but also driving the construction of a national service network,” said Jerome Boyet, General Manager of Alstom’s Central and Western Asia region. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Gulsara Arystankulova, Kazakh Ambassador to France, KTZ management, representatives from Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Industry and Construction, and key stakeholders from Jiangbul State, witnessing an important moment in deepening bilateral cooperation.
The completion of this base not only demonstrates Alstom’s long-term commitment to Kazakhstan’s rail market but also enhances local rail operational efficiency and safety through the introduction of world-class maintenance standards, setting a benchmark for transportation infrastructure upgrades in Central Asia. In the future, Alstom plans to advance the construction of the remaining three maintenance bases as per the agreement to further consolidate its leading position in rail maintenance in Central Asia.
