On May 22nd, Polish-manufactured PESA electric trains made their official debut at a conference in Oradea, Romania, seven months ahead of the contractual delivery schedule. The $660 million contract includes the supply of 62 regional electric trains by early 2027, along with a 15-year maintenance and service package, funded partially by the EU Modernization Fund and the remaining by Romania's national budget.
Each PESA electric train consists of three carriages, accommodating up to 224 passengers, with designated spaces for mobility-impaired individuals and large luggage storage. Equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, the trains ensure compliance with EU standards and integration with continental rail networks. Signed in January 2024, the contract originally scheduled the first train delivery within 24 months, but PESA completed the handover in May 2025—seven months ahead of plan—enabling Romania to accelerate its rolling stock modernization. Additionally, PESA will establish three service centers in Romania to support maintenance and repair activities, aiming to enhance regional rail transport quality, passenger comfort, and compliance with EU environmental regulations. By 2027, Romania is set to receive the remaining 61 trains, marking a significant revitalization of its rail infrastructure.
