Russia's TMH Unveils New DP2D Dual-Power Train

The DP2D dual-power train set launched by Russia's TMH Group comprises TEP70BS diesel locomotives, EP2DM electric locomotives, and modified carriages. Currently undergoing testing at TMH's factory in Demikhovo, the train will later be moved to the test tracks of the VNIIZhT Railway Research Institute and the Belorechensk testing ground of the North Caucasus Railway. Certification is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Featuring a modular design, the train has a maximum speed of 120 km/h and can be flexibly configured with 2 to 6 carriages (including a lead car). The six-carriage version can accommodate 636 passengers, with two dedicated seats for people with disabilities. The power system is derived from TEP70BS locomotives assembled at the Kolomensky factory, while the carriages are based on the EP2DM electric train platform. Interior amenities include wide-spacing soft seats, panoramic windows, air conditioning with air purification, USB charging ports, multimedia panels, and adaptive information systems for visually impaired passengers. Bicycle racks are installed on both the lead car and trailers, making the train suitable for tourist routes.

Testing is carried out in phases: the first phase at the Kolomna factory evaluates control system operation, assembly precision, and cab ergonomics; the second phase in the DMZ area verifies power supplies and automatic diagnostic systems. The train will soon be transported to the VNIIZhT circular test track in Shelbinka for at least 5,000 km of running tests, followed by high-speed and load tests in Belorechensk. Drawing on the experience of the Lugansk Locomotive Plant's DPL-series train projects in the 2000s, the DP2D will bring efficient and comfortable passenger transport to non-electrified rail lines across Russia upon its debut.
