Russia’s independently developed asynchronous traction motor, the TAD650, is about to enter mass production and will provide power for the country’s first batch of domestic high-speed trains, the EVS360. The motor has passed acceptance tests, with mass production set to begin in February 2026 and industry certification to be completed in early spring.
Developed by Russian Electric Motors (RED), the motor has a rated power of 650 kW, weighs 750 kg, and achieves an efficiency of at least 95%, with all performance indicators exceeding industry standards. Its first prototype was unveiled at the Ural Locomotives plant in early 2025.
RED has signed a three-year supply contract to deliver 688 TAD650 motors, meeting the needs of at least 43 EVS360 high-speed trains. The EVS360, with a top speed of 360 km/h, is scheduled to begin certification testing with its first prototype in summer 2027, with commercial operations on the Moscow–Saint Petersburg high-speed line set to start in early April 2028.
The TAD650 is the latest addition to RED’s railway motor portfolio. Its production marks a key step in Russia’s localization of traction systems and provides essential power support for the domestic high-speed train program.
