HS2 UK announced that visitors to Alstom's "The Greatest Gathering" event in Derby from August 1-3 will be the first to see the full-scale concept model carriage of the Class 895 train. The display showcases the collaborative achievements of HS2 Ltd, future operator West Coast Partnership Development (WCPD), and joint manufacturer Hitachi-Alstom High Speed.

James Dawson, senior rolling stock engineer at HS2, stated that the team has deeply understood passengers' core needs and incorporated feedback to ensure the carriage interior design meets or exceeds expectations. As these trains will operate on both high-speed and conventional lines in the UK for decades, the design balances current and long-term needs. The Class 895's design is heavily influenced by public feedback, with WCPD's passenger experience project involving 20 dedicated user groups and over 500 consumer focus group members.

Key design highlights include: step-free accessible access at all new HS2 stations, redesigned handrails, audio announcements and visual displays in restrooms, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility; more legroom than UK standard carriages, optimized overhead and under-seat luggage storage, baby changing tables, clothes and luggage hooks, salon seats, multiple charging ports, and a redesigned horizontal bicycle storage area.

In 2021, the Hitachi-Alstom High Speed joint venture won the £2 billion high-speed train manufacturing contract. The trains will be designed and built at three UK locations: Crewe for bogie production, County Durham for body welding and electrical installation, and the joint venture factory in Derby for interior assembly.
