On February 5, 2026, the Hungarian government officially approved the next phase of the railway fleet renewal plan, authorizing the national railway passenger company (MÁV) to launch multiple procurement processes. A total of 92 EMU sets and 88 passenger coaches will be tendered to enhance railway capacity and service quality. This move comes just 65 days before the April parliamentary elections, signaling a key effort to boost public services.

Under the government resolution, MÁV will conduct a conditional open tender for 50 long-distance EMU sets, with an option for an additional 20 sets. Additionally, MÁV will utilize funds from the upgraded Integrated Transport Development Operational Program (IKOP Plusz) to procure 22 electric EMU sets.

Conventional long-distance passenger vehicle renewal is also included in the plan: MÁV will tender for 78 intercity passenger coaches through commercial bank loans (with a minimum 10% self-funding ratio), and will use internal group funds to procure 10 additional intercity coaches from the Hungarian company Magyar Vagon.

It is worth noting that MÁV previously acquired the bankrupt Dunakeszi vehicle repair plant, while Magyar Vagon's Szolnok plant plans to build 285 IC+ type coaches for MÁV. The IC+ coaches produced by the plant have already secured orders from Slovak Railways, indicating potential for international market entry.
