The Largest Ever! Amtrak Launches 800-Car Long-Distance Train Procurement

2026-04-21

Amtrak has officially launched the largest long-distance passenger train procurement in its history, planning a single purchase of over 800 new long-distance passenger cars. The move aims to comprehensively replace the aging fleet, which has been in service for nearly 50 years, across 14 long-distance routes nationwide. This fleet renewal, coordinated with the Federal Railroad Administration, signifies a systemic upgrade of Amtrak’s long-distance intercity rail service.

The new fleet will feature a fully single-level, standardized design, phasing out the current complex mix of single- and bi-level cars. This decision targets fleet commonality across all routes, aiming to simplify maintenance, reduce costs, and broaden supplier competition. Amtrak has released multiple new interior concept designs, with the goal of selecting the final manufacturer by late 2027 to replace the Superliner series bi-level cars built between 1975 and 1996.

This procurement is a critical step in Amtrak’s nationwide fleet modernization. Currently, Siemens Mobility, with its Venture single-level cars (orders exceeding 700 units), holds a dominant position. However, new entrants like AmeriStarRail have introduced competing designs, potentially altering the market landscape.

Nevertheless, significant funding uncertainties loom behind this ambitious plan. The $66 billion federal infrastructure bill supporting rail is set to expire, and the draft FY2027 budget proposes substantial cuts to rail subsidies, putting pressure on both Amtrak’s operations and procurement funding. Securing stable financial support will be crucial for the successful implementation of this historic, record-breaking procurement.
