UK: High - speed Trains Begin Equipping with Next - generation Signaling Technology

2025-07-07
The iconic High - speed Trains (HSTs) in the UK are currently being outfitted with modern digital in - cab signaling, marking a significant milestone for the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) and aligning with the Rail 200 celebrations.
On this occasion, 16 Class 43 power cars will be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS), the next - generation signaling technology. Eventually, it will replace the traditional wayside signals in train drivers' cabs with real - time digital displays, facilitating future mixed - traffic operation options. The Class 43 fleet installing ETCS involves various operators and uses: 4 power cars are owned by RailAdventure, used for freight and rolling stock transport. Another 4 are operated by Locomotive Services Limited, mainly for private charter services. The remaining 8 are leased by Colas Rail from Porterbrook for infrastructure operations, including Network Rail’s New Measurement Train (NMT).

These locomotives are expected to undergo a full upgrade by mid - 2026. As the ETCS is rolled out, they will be able to operate seamlessly on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) and other digitally signaled routes. Hitachi Rail, a key partner in the digital transformation, is leading the integration of this technology. Paul Maynard, Vice President of Integrated Communications Oversight at Hitachi Rail, noted: “Providing a ‘digital brain’ for the UK’s legendary InterCity 125 power cars demonstrates how the past and future of rail can coexist. By equipping these Class 43s with ETCS, we make them safer and more connected, thus extending their service life.”
