The US plans to add a transcontinental high-speed rail line, "Transcontinental Chief", proposed by AmeriStarRail from Delaware. It will connect New York and Los Angeles with a travel time of less than 72 hours, utilizing existing railways and passing through Chicago, the Grand Canyon, etc. It will adopt Amtrak's existing carriages, cooperate with multiple railway companies, and allow passengers to carry private cars.

The company aims to launch the line in May 2026, coinciding with the FIFA World Cup and the 250th anniversary of the US founding. However, it needs to solve scheduling, right-of-way and other issues, and obtain Amtrak's approval. Amtrak has rejected similar proposals before and hasn't responded to this new plan, while the company says it has raised private capital and explained the plan to congressmen.
The project's feasibility is in doubt, with Amtrak's attitude being key. Issues like existing railway compatibility, coordination efficiency of companies and competitiveness with aviation remain to be addressed. The plan reflects the US re-examining railway value, as railways, being low-carbon and comfortable, gain more attention.
